The day I became a woman, I became the Bride of Christ.

I remember that day, the day spots of blood appeared on my clothing, and I rushed to my mother for answers. She quickly summoned my father, and amidst confusion and physical discomfort, I was declared a woman.

That evening at church, my father said to me, “You are a woman now. You may partake of communion.” For years I had watched the sacred ritual, longing to sip the juice and crunch the crackers as the adults did. But each time I asked to join, my father said, “No. Not yet.” But this night, I had become a woman, and so I became the Bride of Christ.

This week I’m guest posting over at the fabulous Suzannah Paul’s blog, The Smitten Word, and sharing my journey with sacramental feminism. Read the rest of the post by clicking here, and you will be magically transported to Suzannah’s page!
